Widuchowa is a small municipality located 50 km south of Szczecin, with the Oder River forming its western border. The expanded wastewater treatment plant, situated in close proximity to the river, is a key element of the municipality’s environmental infrastructure.

This completed project marks the second stage of modernization of this strategic facility, which has significantly increased its capacity. As a result of the expansion, the treatment plant in Widuchowa can now process over 50% more wastewater than originally planned. Instead of the projected 40 m³ per day, the facility can now handle 100 m³ of wastewater daily, and in exceptional cases up to 150 m³ per day.

Thanks to the increased treatment capacity, the municipality can confidently plan further sewerage investments, assured that the implemented technologies will ensure efficient and failure-free operation of the facility.

In addition, the solutions used guarantee compliance with the latest environmental standards for wastewater treatment. This undoubtedly benefits both the health of residents and the regional ecosystem.

It is worth noting that the municipality obtained 95% co-financing for the project from the Government Program “Polski Ład” – Strategic Investment Program.

Scope of work

Scope of work
  • design of the wastewater treatment plant expansion
  • construction of a new retention tank ZR2 with equipment:
    • fine-bubble aeration system
    • mixer
    • pump set
  • construction of a biological reactor with equipment
  • construction of a secondary clarifier with equipment
  • construction of a channel screen including delivery, installation, and commissioning
  • construction of the blower foundation including delivery and commissioning of the blowers
  • reconstruction of the control room and dispatch room
  • construction of access roads, pedestrian paths, and paved areas for plant operation

Implemented solutions

The expansion of the wastewater treatment plant in Widuchowa, completed in 2024, constituted the second stage of modernization of this strategically important facility for the municipality. The first stage, carried out by Ecol-Unicon in 2019–2020, focused on improving the plant’s core infrastructure and introducing the first modern technologies.

The primary goal of the second stage was to increase the plant’s operational capacity. This was made possible through the construction of a second – significantly larger – retention tank for transported wastewater, and by enriching the plant with technologies that enhance the treatment process.

As part of the modernization, a channel screen was installed, responsible for the preliminary mechanical treatment of transported wastewater. The pre-treated wastewater then flows into the newly designed retention tank, built from precast elements. It is equipped with a fine-bubble aeration system, two mixers, two pumps, and oxygen and temperature level measurement. These components further optimize the treatment process, leading to more efficient plant operation.

The expansion of the facility to include the channel screen and retention tank significantly increased the lifespan of the treatment plant equipment, as previously impurities flowed directly into the system. In other words, the implemented technologies ensure that the facility will operate reliably and efficiently for the local community for many years to come.

Main parameters of the treatment plant:

  • biological reactor RB2 – total volume 469.56 m³
  • secondary settling tank OW2 – total volume 113.22 m³
  • retention tank ZR2 – active volume 119 m³

This project was carried out in the “design and build” mode. One of the municipality’s key requirements was maintaining the continuous operation of the treatment plant – always a challenge in projects of this complexity. Ecol-Unicon completed the scope of work while ensuring uninterrupted wastewater flow and treatment before discharge.

How did we work on the project?

Expanding a wastewater treatment plant is never a simple task. Any mistake can disrupt the operation of the existing system, so avoiding such situations is a major challenge. Thanks to the experienced team of contractors and managers at Ecol-Unicon, we not only avoided errors but also shortened the project timeline by 6 months, which is a significant achievement for this type of investment. Construction project execution is one of Ecol-Unicon’s flagship services, and our ability to manage projects effectively and efficiently confirms our leadership position in the industry.
